Before visiting Ram Mandir, every devoted pilgrim first seeks Hanuman's blessings at Hanuman Garhi — the hilltop fortress-temple that has stood as guardian of Ayodhya for over 1,200 years. Lord Ram himself is said to have instructed Hanuman to protect the city.
History and Origins
The original structure dates to the 10th century CE. The current building was constructed by Nawab Mansur Ali Khan of Awadh in the 18th century. The fort-like architecture with circular towers reflects Awadhi style, while the interior is pure Hindu sanctity.
The 76 Sacred Steps
The famous 76 steps (Sidi) represent a spiritual ascent. Devotees often climb on their knees as an act of devotion. The view from the top — Ram Mandir and the entire Ayodhya skyline — is breathtaking.
The Deity
The central image is Lord Hanuman in the Balak (child) form — dressed as a prince with ornaments and regal garments. This form is called 'Bal Hanuman' and is unique to this temple. The deity faces south, symbolising his protective role against approaching enemies.
