On Diwali evening, the banks of the Saryu river transform into one of the most spectacular sights on Earth. Over 22 lakh earthen lamps are lit simultaneously in a Guinness World Record ceremony known as Deepotsav.
What is Deepotsav?
Deepotsav (Festival of Lamps) commemorates Lord Ram's return to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. Launched in 2017 by the Uttar Pradesh Government, it has grown into one of India's most anticipated annual cultural events.
Key Events
- Ram Leela performances: 3–4 days of theatrical Ramayana enactments on grand open-air stages
- Laser and light show: A spectacular multimedia show projected on the Saryu river surface
- Helicopter petal shower: Flower petals showered from helicopters over the gathering
- Cultural programs: Classical dance and music by national and international artists
- The Great Diya Lighting: 22+ lakh diyas lit simultaneously on all 55 ghats
Planning Your Deepotsav Visit
Deepotsav sees 15–20 lakh visitors over 3 days. Planning is critical:
- Book accommodation 2–3 months in advance
- Use train — road and flight access is severely congested
- Arrive at the ghats by 4 PM for the 6 PM main ceremony
- Book a guided package — Trip2Ayodhya secures reserved viewing spots for guests
