Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh
Ayodhya, known as the birthplace of Lord Shri Ram, is one of the Sapta Puri — the seven holiest pilgrimage cities in Hinduism. Located on the banks of the sacred Saryu river in Uttar Pradesh, this eternal city has been a centre of faith, culture, and devotion for millions of devotees across the world.
The crown jewel of Ayodhya is the magnificent Ram Mandir, inaugurated in January 2024. Built in Nagara style architecture using Rajasthan's pink sandstone, this divine structure stands as a symbol of faith and cultural heritage. The temple complex houses the consecrated idol of Ram Lalla and draws millions of pilgrims every year.
Located atop a hillock in the heart of Ayodhya, the Hanuman Garhi temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, the eternal devotee of Ram. The 76-step stairway leads to a centuries-old fort-like shrine with a magnificent idol of Hanuman. It is considered mandatory to visit Hanuman Garhi before proceeding to Ram Janmabhoomi for darshan.
Also called Sone ka Ghar (Golden House), Kanak Bhawan is one of the most beloved temples in Ayodhya. The temple enshrines golden-crowned idols of Ram and Sita and is believed to have been gifted to Sita by Kaikeyi as a wedding present.
The Saryu river is considered as sacred as the Ganges in Ayodhya. Ram Ki Paidi is a series of beautiful ghats along the Saryu where devotees take holy dips, especially during festivals. The evening Saryu Aarti is a breathtaking spectacle of lamps, chants, and devotion that must not be missed.
The royal palace of King Dashratha, father of Lord Ram, Dashrath Mahal is a grand heritage site preserving the memory of Ayodhya's ancient royal lineage. Nearby, Kaushalya Bhawan is dedicated to Ram's mother, Queen Kaushalya.
One of the oldest temples in Ayodhya, the Nageshwarnath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is believed to have been established by Kush, son of Ram. This temple holds special significance during the Shivratri festival.
Ayodhya is a year-round destination. The best time is October to March when the weather is pleasant. Ram Navami (April), Diwali (October/November), and Shravan Mela (July/August) are festival seasons that draw the largest gatherings.
Ayodhya is well connected by Maharishi Valmiki International Airport (AYJ), which now has flights from major Indian cities. The nearest major railway junction is Ayodhya Dham Junction (formerly Faizabad Junction). Road connectivity from Lucknow (135 km), Varanasi (200 km), and Delhi (630 km) is excellent via NH-27 and NH-330.
