Most pilgrims visit Ayodhya for Ram Mandir, but few know that the Ramayana's sacred geography spans the entire subcontinent — from the northern plains to the shores of Lanka. For the most devoted pilgrim, the Ramayana Circuit is the ultimate spiritual journey.
The Seven Ramayana Destinations
1. Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh) — The Birthplace
The journey begins here. Ram's birthplace — home to Ram Mandir, Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan and the Saryu ghats.
2. Chitrakoot (MP/UP Border) — The Forest Exile
Ram, Sita and Lakshmana spent 11.5 years of their exile here. Key sites: Kamadgiri hill, Ramghat, Sphatik Shila and Sati Anusuya ashram.
3. Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh) — The Confluence
Ram crossed the Ganga here en route to Chitrakoot. The Triveni Sangam (confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati) and Valmiki Ashram are the main sites.
4. Nasik (Maharashtra) — The Abduction
Site of Sita's abduction by Ravana. Panchavati forest, Sita Gupha cave and Ramkund bathing ghat are the sacred sites.
5. Hampi/Kishkindha (Karnataka) — The Alliance
Where Ram met Hanuman and Sugriva. The monkey kingdom of Kishkindha corresponds to modern Hampi — Vali-Sugriva caves, Anjaneya Hill (Hanuman's birthplace).
6. Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu) — The Bridge
The southernmost point of mainland India where Ram worshipped Shiva before crossing to Lanka. Ramanathaswamy Temple and Adam's Bridge (Ram Setu).
7. Sri Lanka — The Final Battle
Sigiriya, Nuwara Eliya (believed to be Ashoka Vatika) and the Sita Amman Temple are the key Ramayana pilgrimage sites in Sri Lanka.
